POSSIBLE LAUNCH LOCATION - PLEASE PRAY!!!

What an incredible week... A week of really deep lows and some incredible highs...

Some of you are aware that on Monday we got the indication that Homewood High would probably NOT HAPPEN for a2... On Thursday AM the inclination was confirmed... One door had CLOSED...

For the last several weeks we’ve been diligently praying and searching for the RIGHT LOCATION to launch a2... On Monday, I must admit I was more than a little discouraged by the thought that Homewood might not pan out... But for some reason as the week went on by Thursday, when we got the news that Homewood High wasn’t going to work, there was this firm sense of confidence that God had a plan... We needed to trust Him.

Well, today (Friday, May 30) God has apparently opened a HUGE DOOR as far as a location for a2... A space that would allow for office space, nursery, children’s facility and a first rate worship center – all for a very affordable price... This could be a major answer to prayer... I mean, MAJOR...

Here’s the issue... We need GOD’S FAVOR to shine upon this arrangement...

On Monday, the agent representing the property will take this proposal before a group of people who have to “sign off” on the proposal before it move forward...

I’m so excited about the potential of this location... If things work out on Monday, this will truly be an answer to prayer... It will be a MAJOR and MIRACULOUS “GOD THING.”

Here’s why I’m writing...

Please PRAY... Pray for God’s favor and anointing upon the agent who is representing the property... Please pray that God will give us favor with the people involved in affirming this proposal... Please pray that the “anchor” stores in this development sign off and allow a2 to launch in this location...

Obviously, we want GOD’S WILL, not ours... If this isn’t GOD’S PERFECT WILL for a2, I want this door to SHUT TIGHT... But, if this is God’s purpose and plan for a2, I am praying that He will direct the hearts of the decision makers involved and perform a miracle for a2...

Thanks in advance for joining us in prayer... I’ll keep you informed of what takes place on Monday...

Yours To Count On!

DISCOURAGEMENT AND CHURCH PLANTING

Today we got word that Homewood High School is NOT AN OPTION when it comes to meeting space for a2 Church. We're officially back to Square One, looking for a location for our weekend services...

The search for WHERE we should launch has been a tedious and difficult process. Sometimes discouraging. Then today I read this post from Eric Michael Bryant and somehow it helped my perspective... Check out the excellent quotes by Jerry Falwell and the quote found in the San Antonio Spurs locker room...

Good stuff...

KINGDOM OF COMFORT - Delirious?

Just purchased the new CD by the English worship / rock band Delirious? Sometimes a band will produce great music. Sometimes something else is at work... Something anointed... Something prophetic...

That's what I felt when I listened to the entire CD... The music is still British Rock... Somewhat atmospheric... But the lyrics are filled with depth and poignancy...

The first track on the CD is the title track... Check out these lyrics...

Save me, save me
From the kingdom of comfort where I am king
From my unhealthy lust of material things.

I built myself a happy home
In my palace on my own
My castle falling in the sand
Pull me out, please grab my hand
I just forgot where I came from

Save me save me
From the kingdom of comfort where I am king
From my unhealthy lust of material things

I rob myself of innocence
With the poison of indifference
I buy my stuff at any cost
A couple of clicks and I pay the price
Cuz what I gain is someone else’s loss

Not all of the songs are as lyrically challenging as "Kingdom of Comfort," but several pack a punch both musically and lyrically. Several of the tunes speak to the issue of social justice, but some are simple, sometimes even stark, worship songs that seek to magnify the greatness of our God.

Check the CD out. You can get a sneak peek of the tracks on the Delirious? website... Also, if you buy the CD, the liner notes contain a message from Shane Claiborne that speaks powerfully.

After you check out the CD let me know what you think...

REMEMBER

That's a picture of Arlington National Cemetery. I've read that more than 260,000 people who have been buried in Arlington, representing veterans from every war in U.S. history... That's more than a quarter of a million people who died in service to this country...

Today is Memorial Day. It's a day set aside to remember those whose commitment, loyalty and devotion to our country was demonstrated at the cost of their very lives.

I heard it a long time ago... But it's TRUE and bears repeating... FREEDOM is never FREE. It's always bought with a price and maintained by a struggle.

Here’s a snapshot on the "price tag" of the freedom that you and I experience and enjoy:

Approximately 6,000 patriots died in battle during the American Revolutionary War.

This country lost almost 500,000 during the Civil War, which almost tore this nation apart.

In World War I, more than 116,000 lost their lives in service to America.

In World War II, more than 400,000 U.S. servicemen and women lost their lives.

The Korean War took the lives of 54,246.

Inscribed upon the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. are the names 58,209 men and women, each name representing an individual who gave their lives for this country during the Vietnam War.

This morning I read that more than 4,080 men and women have given their lives in the current war in Iraq.

All in all, well more than 1 million people have died in war, serving this country since our country was founded.

So today, while you're enjoying a day off, spending time with your family, enjoying a trip to the lake, whatever... PAUSE for just a moment to REMEMBER and REFLECT on the price that was paid for the FREEDOM we enjoy...

Maybe you could also write a letter to one of the men or women serving our country on foreign soil today...

Maybe you could just look at a veteran in the eye and say, "THANK YOU."

Today is a day to REMEMBER...and say, "THANK YOU."

a2 - FAILURE AND EXPECTATIONS

Here’s the final installment of notes from a2’s Launch Team Meeting on Sunday, May 18… It attempts two this question: What if we fail? And, What can we expect?

What if we FAIL?

What if people don’t buy in? What if something goes wrong?

Does that mean we didn’t discern God’s will correctly? Does that mean we shouldn’t move forward?

Is it possible that we could fail? Absolutely.

Personally, I’ve never been more aware of my inadequacies and shortcomings than I am right now…

But one of my favorite books is a book by John Ortberg with this title:

“If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat…”

Here’s the story: Peter was sitting in a boat one day with eleven other disciples when he saw Jesus walking on the water. Peter looked at Jesus and said, “If it’s you, call me to come…” Jesus said, “Come.” And Peter got up and went…

Did he eventually sink. Yes. But for a moment he walked on water!

You need to know this when it comes to a2: we might sink. It could happen… But as for me, I’ve got to give the “water walking thing” a try…

Why? Because I would rather get out of the boat and try my best to follow Jesus than to sit in a comfortable boat and never know what it feels like to walk on water.

Finally, what can we EXPECT?

• We can expect this to be DIFFICULT.

We can expect opposition and spiritual warfare. This is a battle for the hearts of human beings and Satan will not take this lying down.

There will be difficulties. There will be doubts. There will be obstacles and problems. There will be times when it will feel like this is really hard work. Why? Because it really is… But “if God is for us, who can be against us.”

• We can expect FEAR.

The number one response that people in the Bible have when God calls them to do something extraordinary is FEAR.

There will be moments filled with fear in this adventure of faith… There have already been some for me, and there will be for us as a church.

But courage is the ability to trust God and do the right thing in spite of my fears…

• We can expect to SEE GOD in action.

That’s just the way it works… When you take a step of faith, you start seeing God show up…

NOTE: If you want more information on being a part of a2’s Launch Team post a comment on this blog or email me at cgoins@a2church.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

TOM PETERS - DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP

Twenty or so years ago I became acquainted with Tom Peters through his legendary book, In Search of Excellence. I've followed Peters' writing somewhat sporadically throughout the years. Here's an excellent video clip of Peters describing his definition of leadership. Nothing revolutionary, but good stuff to think about and chew on. Enjoy.

NEW COLDPLAY VIDEO

Regardless of whether or not you agree with many of their political views, Coldplay consistently produces creative, poignant and sometimes even profound music. Here's the new video for the single Violet Hill. While the lyrics are probably open to interpretation, the song is pretty amazing. The new Coldplay CD drops June 16.

A CHURCH FOR THE WORLD...

A really thought provoking post by Bob Roberts of Glocalnet. Check out his post on the reason for planting a church. Share your thoughts.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Something profound those of us who love the church need to think and pray about:

"There are churches all over the country exploding with growth and all kinds of new churches being planted...so how is it possible that there are 8 million less people attending church today than 20 years ago?" ~ Vince Anotucci, Founding Pastor of Forefront Church

PAIN, TRAGEDY AND WHY?

Last night I received a message from Jessica Borklund asking that we pray for her eleven month old daughter, McKaylee. McKaylee was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few months ago. The tumor has grown and become symptomatic.

McKaylee went in to Children's Hospital for an MRI yesterday, which revealed the growth of the tumor. While the tumor is inoperable, this morning McKaylee underwent surgery and a small piece of the tumor was removed. A biopsy is underway. The family will know the results in 5-7 days.

Please pray.

On top of that, this morning my heart was also gripped by the story of the tragedy in Stephen Curtis Chapman's family. As many of you know, SCC is a gifted and much loved Christian music artist. His music has touched the lives of thousands, maybe millions. Yesterday his five year old daughter, Maria, died in a tragic car accident. You can read a statement from the Chapman family here.

Please pray.

As the father of three girls, my heart is moved by the stories of McKaylee and Maria. I don't understand the reason "why?" I can't imagine the pain these parents are experiencing.

All I know is that Paul's words in Romans 8 make a whole lot of sense in light of these two situations and what's going on in our world: "...the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth...and we ourselves...groan inwardly as we await our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies" (Romans 8:22-23).

I don't understand the tragedy the Chapman's have experienced. I can't even imagine the questions McKaylee's parents are struggling with... But these stories make me all the more aware of how much I long for our ultimate redemption.

PRAY for Stephen, Jessica, Landon and McKaylee Borklund.

PRAY for the family of Stephen Curtis Chapman.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE a2 A DANGEROUS CHURCH?

Yesterday I wrote about WHY another church in BHM is important. Today, I want to describe what it will take to launch a life-giving church in this city.

This is the third installment in our series with content from Sunday PM's Launch Team Meeting.

What will it take to make a2 Church a DANGEROUS CHURCH?

It won’t be easy… There will be a cost…

1. Commit To LAUNCH. (Launch Team)

Whether it is getting a business off the ground or launching a shuttle into space, there is no question which part of the journey involves the most energy…the LAUNCH! It’s CRITICAL to the entire mission.

You only get one shot at the Launch. That’s why the Launch Team is absolutely crucial to what God wants to accomplish through a2 church.

What is the LAUNCH TEAM?

• The LAUNCH TEAM is a “time-oriented” team.

There are two levels of commitment we are asking people to consider.

(1) Six Month Commitment

This will include your commitment to two preview services (June 22, July 20), accompanying organizational meetings, and 4 full months following the actual “launch” on August 17. The commitment begins immediately and ends in December 2008

(2) One Year Commitment

This commitment involves everything above, but continues for a full year and ends in May 2009.

NOTE: When we say that a Launch Team is “time-oriented” we mean that we will always maintain a “kingdom mindset” and should you feel led to pursue another avenue of service in God’s kingdom, we will graciously release you. Obviously, we would love for you to be a continuing part of God’s dream for a2, but we also understand that God places the members in the body “as He sees fit.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

• The LAUNCH TEAM meets to plan strategy.

As we move closer to our stated “Launch Date” of Sunday, August 17, we will gather to plan and prepare for what God wants to accomplish through a2. Three issues will be critical: your attendance, investment and involvement.

• The LAUNCH TEAM is open to everyone and anyone.

If you agree with the mission, values and vision of a2 and you are willing to invest your energy, attendance and gifts in making a2 a reality, you have the once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of a2’s launch.

You don’t have to be a “saint” to be a part of the Launch Team. We aren’t looking for perfect people. If we were the Lead Pastor wouldn’t qualify. We’re looking for people who are ready and willing to create a “come as you are” kind of culture.

• The LAUNCH TEAM is mission driven.

The primary purpose of the Launch team is to invest and invite. Invest in people who aren’t connected with a local church and invite them to be a part of what God is doing through a2.

2. WALK ACROSS The ROOM . (Evangelism)

It will take God IGNITING a fresh fire in the hearts of men, women, young adults, students, teens, and children and fill us with a burning love for people who are far from God…

What does it mean to just “walk across the room”?

• We INVEST in people unconditionally.

• We INVITE them to join us in what God is doing.

Outreach Events:
• Neighborhood Socials – Ice Cream Socials, Dinner Parties, Cook Outs, Etc.

Preview Services:
• Sunday, June 22, 10 a.m. Location: TBA
• Sunday, July 27, 10 a.m. Location: TBA

Weekly Launch Date:
• Sunday, August 17, 10 a.m.

3. ROLL UP Your Sleeves. (Ministry)

It will take your willingness to serve. It will take your willingness to say, “God, how have you gifted me? How do you want me to serve through the ministry of a2?”

Here are some of the ministries that will be critical to a successful launch:

• Prayer
• Evangelism and Outreach
• Children’s Ministry
• Hospitality / Guest Services
• Worship
• Technical
• Set Up / Tear Down
• Small Groups

4. INVEST Your Resources. (Tithing and Offerings)

One of the things we will never do at a2 is that we will NEVER make a BIG DEAL out of money. In fact, we don’t want people to give because we ask them to give. We only want people to give should God ask or lead them to give.

But we really believe that part of what it means to be a devoted follower of Jesus is that we will honor Him with our resources… That means, we will honor Him with our tithes and offerings… And it is important for those of us who feel “called” to be a part of a2, support the ministry God has called us to be a part of…

There are all kinds of needs when it comes to a church plant:

• Leasing or Rental Cost on Worship Space
• General Liability Insurance Costs
• Sound / Lighting / Video Equipment
• Nursery Equipment and Supplies
• Children’s Ministry Equipment and Supplies
• Transportation (Storing and Moving Equipment)
• Salaries
• Outreach and Advertising

A few notes on giving to a2:

We are committed to “doing more with less.” We want to be known as the church that provides incredible, high quality ministry on a disciplined budget.

We are committed to maintaining high standards of accountability and following generally accepted accounting procedures.

I’m very excited about the people who will be guiding our management of resources.

Board Members:
Bob Smith (Successful Church Planter, Founder and Owner of Precision Husky)
Chris Taylor (Edward Jones Investments)
Micah Andrews (Minister, Director of Volunteer Services - The Foundry)
Hugh Lee (G.E. Health Services)
Theresa Berry (Licensed C.P.A. with an M.B.A. from U.T.)

Book Keeper:
Regina Sandlin (Gifted Business Woman)

• We are committed to honoring God with 10% of a2’s income.

a2 will always sow 10% of our tithes and offerings into ministries beyond a2.

5. Get On Your Knees. (Prayer)

"Human history belongs to the intercessors. It belongs to those who believe and pray the future into being.

History doesn't belong to the people we naturally think it belongs to. It doesn't belong to the rich, wealthy or powerful. It doesn't belong to armies, corporations or global media empires. History belongs to the intercessors. It belongs to those who pray the future into being…"
~ Walter Wink

Colossians 4:2-4 (NIV), Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

There are a few ways you can join us in covering the launch of a2 in prayer.

• Prayer Walks (Corporate and Individual Communities)
• Prayer Gatherings
• Prayer Initiatives (Team of 100 Prayer Partners)

That’s what it will take to make a2 a dangerous church… Tomorrow, I’ll write about the possibility of failure and what we can expect as we begin the adventure of planting a life-giving church in BHM…

THE LOCAL CHURCH REALLY IS THE HOPE OF THE WORLD

Yesterday we began a series of post with content from our first Launch Team meeting. Today, i want to continue that series and attempt to answer the "WHY" question when it comes to church planting in general and a2 Church in particular.

So, here it is...

WHAT ARE WE ABOUT?

…to glorify God and lead people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. ~ a2’s Mission

From the get go a2 Church will be OUTREACH ORIENTED and a CHURCH PLANTING CHURCH

WHY Plant Another Church?

I covered some of this material before, but I can't get away from some of these stats and statements... Poignant stuff.

More than 8 of 10 churches are either declining or growing less than their community’s population growth rate. ~ Thom Rainer, Breakout Churches, Zondervan, p. 74.

Since 1991…the number of adults who do not attend church has nearly doubled, rising from 39 million to 75 million - a 92% increase! ~ The Barna Group, May 4, 2004.

In the last quarter-century, America as a whole grew at a rate 20 times faster than the church. ~ The Christian Chronicle

North America is the only continent in the world where Christianity isn’t growing… ~ Elmer Towns, Ed Stetzer and Warren Bird, 11 Innovations in the Local Church, Regal Books, p. 15.

In 2002, the Southern Baptists Church’s Council on Family Life reported that roughly 88 percent of evangelical children are leaving the church shortly after they graduate from high school.

The U.S. is the largest mission field in the Western Hemisphere, and the fifth largest mission field on the planet. ~ George Hunter quoted by Ed Stetzer, Planting Missional Churches, Broadman and Holman Publishers, p.5

Church planting is essential. Without it Christianity will continue to decline in North America. ~ Ed Stetzer, Planting Missional Churches, Broadman and Holman Publishers, p. 5.

The single most effective evangelistic methodology under heaven is planting new churches. ~ Peter Wagner, Author and Missiologist

The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for 1) the numerical growth of the body of Christ in any city, and 2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing churches in a city. Nothing else – not crusades, outreach programs, para-church ministries, growing mega-churches…will have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting. This is an eyebrow raising statement. But to those who have done any study at all, it is not even controversial. ~ Tim Keller, Redeemer Church and Redeemer Church Planting Center

Church planting is Biblical… Jesus championed it! Paul did it.

So, WHY plant another church?

Bob Roberts is the founding and lead pastor of Northwood Church and the founder of Glocalnet, a church planting organization. Roberts says that the only reason to plant another church is for the possibility and hope of TRANSFORMATION… If we don’t really believe that God wants to use His church to TRANSFORM human hearts and the culture at large, then we need to close shop…

So, why plant another church?

ONE WORD: TRANSFORMATION

TWO WORDS: CHANGED LIVES

Our DREAM is that a2 Church be a place where commitment to GOD, love for PEOPLE and service to the WORLD becomes such a reality in the BHM area that the poverty level goes down, the crime rate drops, the divorce rate nose dives, the high school and college graduation rate goes up and people who don’t even believe in God will look at us and say, “I may not believe what they believe, but I’m so glad that community of faith exists… I want to be a part of it…”

A few years ago Bill Hybels made a statement that has stuck with me: The local church is the hope of the world! I believe that!

Politics are a bust. The present line up of presidential candidates don't really provide a lot of inspiration when it comes to national renewal... Education is fine, but the past fifty years have demonstrated the inability of education to bring about lasting change. The only hope for cultural transformation is the LOCAL CHURCH.

Hopefully, that answers the question, "Why?"

Tomorrow, we'll continue this series of posts and attempt to answer the question, "What is it going to take for a2 Church to become a dangerous church?"

Alice Cooper and Truth

I'll never forget as a kid learning about the music of shock rocker Alice Cooper at one of those "The Truth About Rock" seminars at our local church. I was so scared out of my mind about what I had heard that I was probably the first to go forward for prayer, (even though my parents outlawed rock music in my home), and I also ended up having some incredible nightmares... Check out the pic. That's enough to scare anybody.

Today I read this post from Tim Stevens and Corey Mann with an amazing quote from Cooper.

Read the entire quote. Pretty straight forward stuff.

Truth...from the Mouth of Alice Cooper?
Posted by Tim Stevens

Quote from Alice Cooper in the book Life on Planet Rock, page 66-67:

I was pretty much convinced all my life that there was just one God, and there was Jesus Christ, and there was the devil. You couldn't believe in God without believing in the devil. I always tell bands that the most dangerous thing you can do is to believe in the concept of the devil or the concept of God, because you aren't giving them full credit.

When you believe in God, you've got to believe in the all-powerful God. He's not just God, he's the all-powerful God, and he has total control over everyone's life. The devil on the other hand, is a real character that's trying his hardest to tear your life apart. If you believe that this is just mythology, you're a prime target, because you know that's exactly what Satan wants: to be a myth. But he's not a myth, of this I'm totally convinced of that.

So here we are. We have God pulling us one way and the devil pulling us another, and we're in the middle. We have to make a choice. And everyone, at some point in their life, has to make that choice. When people say, "How do you believe this? Why do you believe this?" I just say nothing else speaks to my heart. This doesn't speak to my intellect, it doesn't speak to my logic-it speaks right to my heart and right to my soul, deeper than anything I've ever thought of. And I totally believe it. That being said, I'm not a very good Christian. I mean, none of us are ever good Christians. That's not the point. When you're a Christian, it doesn't mean you're gonna be good, it means you've got a harder road to pull.

Thanks to Corey Mann for the quote.

HOW JESUS SEES OUR WORLD...

Last night a great group of people gathered to hear about the launch of a2 Church. Janet and I were so humbled by this turn out! Wow! Our house was literally jammed! So wild! So cool!

There was a lot of energy and excitement in the room, and we really believe that this meeting was the start of something really neat.

Over the next few days, I thought I would share a recap of the information we shared at our first Launch Team Meeting.

So here’s a go… If you have additional questions, shoot me an email at cgoins@a2church.org or post a comment…

Matthew 28:18-19 (NIrV), Then Jesus came to them. He said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 So you must go and make disciples of all nations…”

Jesus didn’t say, “You guys stay home and form a little holy huddle where you can take care of yourselves and send other people out; where you can pay money to have someone else go.” Jesus said, “You must go…”

From the outset, a2 Church will be a church that GOES… Sometimes we’ll fly. Sometimes we’ll try. Sometimes we’ll make mistakes. Sometimes we will fail spectacularly. But one thing is for sure: we will always GO!

Matthew 9:35-37 describes a story where Jesus GOES out and walks around the towns and villages in Galilee. Verse 35 gives us a beautiful description of Jesus’ heart…

Matthew 9:35 (NIV), When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

I love that! Jesus didn’t get mad at the crowds… He didn’t judge them because their lives were so jacked up. Jesus had “COMPASSION on them.”

Here’s an important question: If Jesus walked the streets of our city, how do you think He would feel? What would He see? What would He say?

Do you think Jesus would say:

“You know, people in the greater Birmingham Metropolitan Area, you guys eat really, really well. You have great BBQ. You are incredibly religious! Over all, you have great jobs. You have a pretty stable economy. You really value family. You have incredible marriages and healthy homes. You are really moral and pristinely pure. In fact, you’re so well off, you don’t need me… So I think I’ll go to some other part of the world where people have hearts that are empty, lives that are broken and they’re desperate for God… You guys don’t really need me. You pretty much have life figured out.”

Do you think Jesus would say that? I don’t think so! I think if Jesus walked the streets of this city His HEART would BREAK.

One of the big problems in the American church is that we fail to see our communities as a mission field. But there are people in your community who feel “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd,” and when God sees these people His heart breaks. He has compassion.

Matthew 9:37 (NIrV), Then Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is huge."

Some translations read: “The harvest is plentiful…” or “The harvest is great…” In other words, the need is enormous!

With a need so enormous you almost expect Jesus to say something like, “Hey guys… The situation is hopeless… The job’s too big… After all, what can one carpenter with twelve followers possibly do…”

But that’s not what He says… Jesus says….

Matthew 9:37 (NIrV), “The harvest is huge. But there are only a few workers. 38 So ask (PRAY) the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest field.”

This is where it starts… It starts with sincere and earnest prayer that God will raise up workers… And one of my major prayers these days is that God will RAISE UP WORKERS who can turn the vision of a2 into a reality

Have you ever seen the movie Field of Dreams? It’s a modern classic. There’s a line in the movie when Kevin Costner’s character is given an assignment to build a baseball field… A mystic voice speaks to Costner and says, “If you build it, they will come…”

Sometimes that idea gets perpetuated in the church… There’s this idea, “If we just do something, unchurched people will come… In fact, they’ll BREAK DOWN THE DOORS to get in…”

But that’s not the way it works. It usually starts with ONE PERSON who loves and knows Jesus who makes a decision to reach out and love and care for somebody who doesn’t know Jesus and help them take the FIRST STEP…

That’s the way it will most likely work with a2

Here’s the question: Will you take responsibility to reach out to a friend, family member, neighbor, co-worker, acquaintance, the person who works in the check out line at Wal Mart, the gal who works the desk at the gym and share the love of God?

I really believe God is wanting us to view our world the same way Jesus viewed His world: “When he saw the people, He had COMPASSION…”

Well, that's the first installment in our overview of a2's first Launch Team Meeting... Tomorrow we'll continue this series of posts...

How about you? How's your heart these days? When you look at the jacked up people in your world, does your heart break? Are you filled with compassion?

The Foundry

A couple of days ago I was invited to attend a "Lunch and Learn" at one of Birmingham's best kept secrets: "The Foundry."

The Foundry is a Rescue Mission and Recovery Center that "offers relief services such as nutritious food, safe shelter and clean clothing" to more than 240 men and women who struggle with "life-dominating sins that had stolen their hope."

But The Foundry does even more. It also features a Christ-centered, residential recovery program that provides the hope of radical personal transformation.

Bill Heintz is the Executive Director of the Foundy and "the visionary" behind many of the Foundry's amazing accomplishments. The ministry raises 70% of it's operating income through enterprises like "the largest thrift store in the Southeast," an Auto Sales and Service Center, the Foundry Studios and more.

It also features its own medical clinic that not only serves the residents of The Foundry, but also provides medical care to the uninsured in the area at an amazingly low cost.

Heintz, an interdenominational minister, and his wife, Michelle, moved to Birmingham 12 years ago and took over what was then the Bessemer Rescue Mission, a typical overnight shelter in a corner building. They had no experience treating addiction. But in 1996, the Heintzes and a small staff converted the shelter into a treatment center with eight beds.

Today, the Foundy touches the lives of more than 240 men and women... This week they will officially begin refurbishing a three story building that will allow them to house more than 50 women...

This morning, Janet, myself and the kids took in their weekend worship service. The worship was passionate. The congregation was ethnically diverse. The place was "alive." Micah Andrews presented a challenging message.

If you're not acquainted with the ministry of The Foundry, check out their website here. Better yet, check out their ministry. Experience a weekend or Thursday PM Worship Service.

This is a ministry that lives out the reality of Matthew 5, "men will see your good works and glorify your Father i heaven."

This is a ministry worth celebrating. An incredibly bright light in a dark and broken world.

THE BARE NECESSITIES...

David Foster is an author and the founding and lead pastor of The Gathering in Nashville, TN. Yesterday David had a great post that provides perspective for up and coming church planters like me who sometimes get overwhelmed by all of the fine details that go into planting a church.

The post is titled: 3 Things You Don’t Need, But Think You Do; and 3 Things You Do Need, But Think You Don’t. Check it out here, and tell me what you think...

By the way, a few years ago, Mark Williams put me onto a great little book that helps remind us of the "bare necessities" when it comes to planting a "life-giving church." The book is titled: "When The Church Was Young."

Here are the chapter titles...

When the Church was Young, It Had:

* No Buildings
* No Denominations
* No Fixed Organization
* No New Testament
* No Vocabulary of Its Own
* No Dogmatic System
* No Sabbath Rest (in the Gentile World)

But It Did Possess:
* An Experience
* A Store of Teaching from Christ
* A Gospel

Simple, yet profound...

Foster's post and Loosley's book remind me, STAY FOCUSED ON THE ESSENTIALS... STAY FOCUSED ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS!

What about you: what are some things you think you need, but really don't? What are some things you're likely to think you don't need, but really do?

WHY PLANT ANOTHER CHURCH?

Okay, here's the obvious question: why plant another church?

More than 8 of 10 churches are either declining or growing less than their community’s population growth rate. ~ Thom Rainer, Breakout Churches, Zondervan, p. 74.

Since 1991…the number of adults who do not attend church has nearly doubled, rising from 39 million to 75 million - a 92% increase! ~ The Barna Group, May 4, 2004.

In the last quarter-century, America as a whole grew at a rate 20 times faster than the church. ~ The Christian Chronicle

North America is the only continent in the world where Christianity isn’t growing ~ Elmer Towns, Ed Stetzer and Warren Bird, 11 Innovations in the Local Church, Regal Books, p.

Finally, the answer to the question: Why plant another church? Because church planting is Biblical… Jesus championed it! Paul did it.

Are you interested in being part of a missional movement with the potential to impact a city for the kingdom of God and with the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Then make plans to join us this Sunday.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
If you are NOT connected with a local church, we need your help. As a new church plant we are at ground zero – no building, no people, no equipment, no money…ground zero. But we firmly believe that God is stirring the hearts of men, women, young adults, students, teens and children to “dream big” and plant a new life-giving church in the Birmingham area.

Take a moment to pray and ask God if He is leading you to be a part of the a2 Church Launch Team. Then, make plans to attend our first Launch Team Meeting this Sunday evening.

You can MAPQUEST directions or call us at the number listed above.

WAYS TO PARTNER:

1. Prayer Partner

We really believe “history belongs to the intercessors. It belongs to those who believe and pray the future into being.” ~ Walter Wink

Why not add a2 to your prayer list and pray for a2 on a consistent, regular basis? This simple act can have a significant impact.

2. Hands On Help

We also believe that God has gifted the body of Christ with some amazing gifts and abilities. Perhaps you feel led to put those gifts and abilities into action through the ministry of a2.

Let us know… There are all kinds of ways you can serve…

3. Outreach and Evangelism

a2 Church wants to reach unchurched people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. That’s our goal. Help us reach out by inviting your unchurched friends, neighbors, work associates and acquaintances to be a part of a2. Invite them to the Launch Team Meeting. Everybody enjoys great BBQ.

4. Financial Partnership

It’s the most difficult aspect of church planting to talk about, but financial partners are needed. Just pray. If God speaks, listen. If He doesn’t, cool. We firmly trust in the faithfulness of our great God.

To find out more about how you can be a part of this missional community, join us this Sunday night.

RELEASING YOUR POTENTIAL

This morning I listened to another MP3 in Erwin McManus’s series titled “Vital Signs.” Today’s message was on “Releasing Your Potential.”

Great stuff!

Here’s the reality: there is extraordinary potential in every human being. There are talents and gifts that we can’t take any credit for… To use the words of one somewhat controversial radio personality, we all have “talent on loan from God.”

Unfortunately, most of us never live up to our God-given potential. Most of us die without having ever become what God had in mind when He created us.

One of my favorite books is by John Ortberg. The book is titled, “The Life You’ve Always Wanted.” It is an incredible book. I highly recommend it.

In the book, Ortberg makes this statement. I read it right after the book was first released. It has continued to haunt me ever since:

“I am disappointed with myself. I am disappointed now so much with particular things I have done as with aspects of who I have become. I have a nagging sense that all is not as it should be…”

Ortberg describes some of his disappointment, until he finally reaches this conclusion:

"Where does my disappointment come from? …my failure to be the person God had in mind when he created me."

Do you ever feel like that? Do you ever feel like you’re not tapping the potential God placed in you, that you’re just sort of aimlessly meandering through life?

Part of this frustration and disappointment is a direct result of the fall. According to Genesis 3, one of the immediate consequences of our sin was frustration and futility regarding our work.

Don’t misunderstand! Work was never a result of the fall. God designed us to work. Part of what it means to be “human” is to work. But the fall brought a nagging sense of frustration and futility when it comes to work. (Genesis 3:17)

Obviously, part of what God wants to redeem is our work.

This morning, McManus gave four really helpful and simple steps for discovering and unleashing our God-given potential.

If you’ve never listened to McManus, make it point to check out his podcast on I-tunes.

So, how do I discover and unleash my God-given potential?

1. Work Hard.

This is the “non-sexy” reality of unleashing our potential. It’s not “easy” to discover and unleash our potential. It’s going to require hard work.

Proverbs 14:23 (NIV), All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

You can talk and talk and talk about what you’re going to do; but talk, in and of itself, doesn’t produce results. You’re going to have to take action.

Greatness almost always comes as result of hard work. Unfortunately, we live in a world that regularly puts “greatness” on display, but never allows us to see the process that led to the development of greatness.

Greatness requires hard work.

Colossians 3:23 (NIV), Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men…

2. Work Hard at What Comes “Easy.”

Working hard is a matter of discipline, diligence and devotion. But working hard at what comes “easy” is a matter of passion, talent and giftedness.

If you’re going to release your potential you need to discover your giftedness and passion and work in alignment with the way God has wired you up.

So, what invigorates you even while you’re working at it? What are you gifted to do? What comes natural to you?

Michael Jordan is undoubtedly one of the greatest athletes of all time… But think about the difference between Jordan’s effectiveness as a basketball player, and Jordan’s effectiveness as a baseball player… Huge!

As a basketball player Jordan’s accomplishments are legendary: 5 MVP’s, 10 All-NBA First Team designations, 14 NBA All Star appearances, 3 All Star MVP’s, 10 scoring titles, 6 Finals MVP’s, and a total of 6 NBA Championships… Incredible! Some say he’s the best basketball player in history.

But as a baseball player, even though Jordan was a gifted athlete, he never really got off first base. In fact, he rarely made it to first base…

It’s not enough just to work hard; you’ve got to work hard at what comes “easy.” Work hard in the area of your giftedness.

3. Work Hard Until Its Hardly Work.

In other words, keep developing your talents, skills and abilities…

Most gifted musicians don’t just sit down at a piano and have instant mastery over the keyboard… Even though they’re gifted they have to work at playing scales and sight-reading, until that kind of stuff becomes second nature…

It’s the same in life; we need to work hard in the area of our giftedness until our work becomes natural and free flowing…

4. Work Hard At What Matters Most.

Don’t’ throw away your giftedness and passion on stuff that doesn’t really matter.

Erwin shared a great example from the Bible that basically wraps up all four principles and ideas…

Luke 5:1-11 (NIV), One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2 he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

The rest is really history…

So, how are you doing on this one? Are you disappointed that maybe you haven’t become all that God had in mind when He created you? Do you work hard? Do you work hard at what comes easy? Do you work hard until it’s hardly work? And, are you working hard for what matters most?

LAUNCHING LARGE!!!

a2 Church Launch Team Kickoff Meeting

This Sunday, May 18, 5:30 p.m.

Location: Home of Chris and Janet Goins
328 Stone Brook Circle * Birmingham, AL 35226
205.979.3633 Home

Okay, guys and gals... This is it! This Sunday is the FIRST LAUNCH TEAM MEETING of a2 Church!

I know... I know... Maybe you’re asking...

“Chris, what is a launch team?” A “launch team” is a team of committed people – men, women, students, boy and girls – ready and willing to assist the lead pastor in planning, preparing for and executing an effective church launch. Church planting is a “team sport.” There’s no possible way to take this challenge on all alone. People are IMPORTANT.

“But, what if I’m not sure? What if I need more information?” Then the Launch Team Meetings are FOR YOU... We’ll share the vision, mission, values and dream of a2 church... Perhaps in the context of hearing about the activity of God through a2 church you’ll know more about what God is saying specifically to you. There are no strings attached. We firmly believe 1 Corinthians 12:7, that God sets the members in the church “as He sees fit.”

“What about my kids? Can they attend the launch team meeting?” You bet! Children are welcome. Child care will be provided... And if your kids want to sit in on the actual launch team meeting, they’re welcome to sit in on that, as well. We believe God uses kids and kids are a vital part of what God is going to do through a2. Hey, we’ve got some of those ourselves...

“What about teenagers? What about high school students?” We not only “need” high school students, we “WANT” high school students to be a part of a2 from the “get go.” I’m a firm believer that students are a huge part of what God wants to do through a2... So, yes! All middle school, high school and college students are welcome to attend. We need your energy, passion for God, creativity and insight as we attempt to launch a2.

“Will there be food?” Of course! You couldn’t have a true a2 gathering without food. Refreshments will be served.

“How long will the meeting last?” Probably until about 7 or, at the latest, 7:30 p.m.... But hey, feel free to leave whenever you need to leave...

Here’s the central question: Do you “believe” God has called you to be a part of the “core group” that will help make a2 church a reality? Then, we need you!

Once again, this meeting is HUGE... COLOSSAL! Did I say, “BIG”?

If you feel God may be leading you to unite with the launch ministry of a2 and you’re NOT a part of another local church, make plans to join us for our first launch team meeting this Sunday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m.

You can MAPQUEST directions to our house. For more information don’t hesitate to call us at 205.979.3633. If possible, please R.S.V.P. via email or telephone by Friday, May 16 so we’ll know how to adequately prepare. Thanks.

RECLAIMING YOUR LIFE

Just finished listening to an excellent MP3 of Erwin McManus… Erwin is a gifted communicator with a huge passion for the church of Jesus Christ. He also serves as the Lead Pastor for an innovative church in Los Angeles, CA called Mosaic.

Erwin’s messages usually pack a punch. This one was no different. The message is titled “Reclaim Your Life” from a series titled Vital Signs. In the message, Erwin challenges us to ask ourselves four important questions

These are some great questions that we all need to “hang out with” from time to time… Why not take some time today to think about your answer for each of these questions?

The time spent could change your life…

Why am I doing what I’m doing?

Really. Why? Is it just momentum or is it mission? Is it incidental or is it intentional? Has the inertia of life just sort of taken over or am I doing what I feel called to do by God?

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV), For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

• How can I do more of what I love and less of what I just tolerate?

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

That’s God’s promise! If we find our delight, satisfaction and fulfillment in God, He will shape our passions and desires, and that will become an incredible compass for life.

What steps can I take that will allow me to do more of what I love and less what I just seem to tolerate?

• What life changes and life choices would I have to make to create more good with my life?

Maybe I just need to spend a little more time with my kids… Maybe it’s walking across the street to meet my neighbor… Maybe it’s listening to my co-workers in the next cubicle who feel trapped in a difficult marriage or relationship… Maybe it’s leaning into the giftedness that God has granted me… Maybe it’s taking a risky and bold step of faith… Maybe it’s championing the dreams and passion of my spouse….

Sometimes the changes we need to make aren’t monumental or grandiose; they’re small and simple, but profoundly powerful.

• Have I allowed God to give me life as a gift?

This is an incredible fact that remains lost on many of us: we can’t really live unless God gives us life.

Ephesians 2:4 (NIV), …because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

It’s impossible to “reclaim” a life that you never had to begin with…

A few years ago Bruce Willis starred in a groundbreaking movie called The Sixth Sense in which he played a child psychologist named Malcolm Crowe, who was working with a troubled boy named Cole, played by Haley Joel Osmet.

Cole is terrified by visitations from people who have died. He finally summons the courage to reveal his “secret” to Malcolm. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the movie turns on one critical scene when Cole looks at Malcolm and says:

“I want to tell you my secret now.”

“Ok,” says Dr. Crowe.

“I see dead people.”

“In your dreams?” Dr. Crowe asks.

Cole shakes his head no.

“While you’re awake?”

Cole nods yes.

“Dead people like in graves or coffins?”

Cole answers, “Walking around like regular people. They don’t see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don’t know they’re dead.”

In Ephesians 2 Paul basically says, “Before Christ we were spiritually dead… Walking around like regular people… We may not have known we were dead, but we were DEAD nonetheless, in desperate need of resurrection.”

So, the final question may be the most important question, “Have I allowed God to give me the gift of life?” Because if I haven’t, I can’t really live in the first place…

Thanks Erwin for four great questions…

How would you answer these questions? What is God saying to you?

PAUL, A PASTOR’S RETREAT AND ME…

This morning my Bible Reading Plan had me in Acts 20.

This is an incredible chapter. In fact, it’s one of my favorites in the New Testament. For years, it has been one of the primary passages that has formed and shaped my approach to pastoring and ministry in general.

Here’s the setup. After Paul arrives on an island called Miletus, he feels that it’s crucial to meet with the elders and pastors of the church at Ephesus… Verses 18 through the end of the chapter describe that meeting…

These verses are loaded with the heart and soul of a guy who put it all “on the line” for Jesus and His church…

They also reveal some of the priorities that governed Paul’s life and ministry… In reading Acts 20 again, I wonder if MY priorities line up with Paul’s?

Acts 20:20-21 (NLT), I never shrank from telling you the truth, either publicly or in your homes. 21 I have had one message for Jews and Gentiles alike – the necessity of turning from sin and turning to God, and of faith in our Lord Jesus.

Wow! That’s it! Paul said, “I had one message!" What was the message? Pretty simple and straight forward! "Repentance and faith… Repentance and faith… Repentance and faith… Turn from sin and to God… Put your faith in Jesus Christ. That's it! Pure and simple.”

How simple! How profound!

Sometimes I think we confuse the message! For Paul it boiled down to some very basic issues and this is what he spent his life teaching and preaching…

Acts 20:22-23 (NLT), "And now I am going to Jerusalem, drawn there irresistibly by the Holy Spirit, not knowing what awaits me, 23 except that the Holy Spirit has told me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead.

I love the fact that Paul describes the Spirit’s leadership in his life as “irresistible.” This is how I want to live life… I want to know that God has “irresistibly” drawn and called me…

It’s also interesting that the “irresistible drawing by the Holy Spirit” was not to an easy, carefree life, but to a radical life that would include pain and persecution!

What about Paul's commitment to the mission? I love Verse 24.

Acts 20:24 (NLT), But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus – the work of telling others the Good News about God's wonderful kindness and love.

Here’s the way it reads in the message.

Acts 20:24 (MSG), What matters most to me is to finish what God started: the job the Master Jesus gave me of letting everyone I meet know all about this incredibly extravagant generosity of God.

I love that! Paul’s life was wrapped up in accomplishing God’s purpose and plan! It meant everything to this guy! Paul's focus in life... His purpose for living was to share the good news about God's extravagant grace!

That’s the way I want to live… All too often, I blow it… Life’s not about the mission, the call, the work given me by Jesus… The message of God's extravagant grace... Instead, it becomes about my desires, wants, plans, and personal agendas…

Acts 20:25-27a (NLT), "And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the Kingdom will ever see me again. 26 Let me say plainly that I have been faithful. No one's damnation can be blamed on me, 27 for I didn't shrink from declaring all that God wants for you.

What a way to live! No regrets! Paul says, “I put it all on the line and YOU KNOW IT!”

I'm challenge by the fact that when Paul thought of God's work in Ephesus, he could confidently say, "No one's damnation can be blamed on me..."

Talk about convicting. Can you honestly look at the people in your ministries sphere of influence and say, "Hey! When it comes to this harvest field, not a soul can blame me if they end up facing eternity without God?" Oh, man...

Paul was a "man on fire" with the mission and call of God. So much so that when he looked back at his work in Ephesus, his attitude was, "Job delegated. Job done. God gave me a job to do, and I did it."

ACTS 20:27b (NLT), "And now beware! Be sure that you feed and shepherd God's flock – his church, purchased with his blood – over whom the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders.

That’s the challenge! After describing his personal commitment to ministry, Paul challenges the elders at Ephesus. “Feed and shepherd God’s flock… It’s pretty important to God… He purchased it with His own blood… If the church matters to God, it ought to matter to you… The Holy Spirit made you an elder, pastor or overseer, so take it seriously… Lay your life on the line for God's church!”

Pretty power packed passage, huh? How are you doing? Are you committed to teaching and preaching a simple message? Are you committed to pursuing God’s purpose and calling, regardless of the cost? Can you honestly say, "No one's damnation in my sphere of influence can be blamed on me?"

Sound off! How does this passage challenge the way you approach your ministry and calling?

Personally, it drives me to repentance and dependence on God.

FIVE ESSENTIALS FOR EVERY WOMAN!

Some time ago I ready bout a woman whose husband came home one day to what he could describe only as s war zone. He walked into the house and in the kitchen, the dishes were stacked high in the sink. There were half eaten sandwiches all over the kitchen, spilled cereal in the floor, mounds of laundry scattered throughout the house.

He walked into the living room and his wife was on the couch under the clutter of used newspapers and tons of toys.

She looked up at her husband and said:

“You know how you ask me everyday when you come home from work what I do all day long… Well, today I didn’t do it…”

One of the things that I discovered several years ago is the fact that Mother’s Day evokes a variety of emotions. For some, Mother’s Day is a good day. You are happily married. You have children. Your kids like you. Your mother is living and you and your mother actually get along. For some of you, Mother’s Day is a really good day…

Then there are others, and for you Mother's Day is a rather difficult or painful day.

Some of you don’t have children because you’re not married, but you would really like to be married... So Mother’s Day is a painful reminder of your present marital status.

Some of you are married and desperately want to have children, but as of yet, yours prayers for a child have gone unanswered and Mother's Day causes you to "twinge" with a little pain...

Some of you have lost your mom, and whenever Mother’s Day rolls around it’s a fresh reminder of that loss.

A few years ago, I ran across a list of five ESSENTIAL TRUTHS every woman can't live without... So, regardless of the emotions you may be experiencing as we approach Mother's Day, check out this list... Maybe it will encourage you...

1. God Loves You!!!

On those days when you feel unlovable and all alone, remember the fact that you are loved by God.

Isaiah 54:10 (NIV), Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken.

2. You Are Valuable!

A couple of years ago I read that Salary.com calculated the annual salary for a “stay at home mother of two” who works – they say – an average of 100 hours a week…

Do you know what these mothers would make if they received a paycheck for their work?

Salary.com suggested that the annual base pay for a 40-hour stay-at-home mom’s workweek would be $43,461. But a mother would earn an additional $88,009 a year for 60 hours of overtime each week, making the annual salary for a stay at home mom over $130,000.00.

If you are a mom, realize that you’re incredibly valuable!

Proverbs 31:10-12 (NLT), Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is worth more than precious rubies. 11Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. 12She will not hinder him but help him all her life.

3. You Don’t Have To Be Perfect!

Really! You don't! Despite the pressure you sometimes feel from the media, your spouse, family, friends... You don't have to be perfect...

4. We Appreciate You!

Many women wonder, “Does my husband appreciate me? Does my family appreciate me? Are my children aware and are they thankful for the investment I’ve made in their life?”

Husbands, kids, daughters…one of the greatest gifts we can give our wives and mothers is the gift of sincere, genuine, personal, practical and continual appreciation.

5. You Are Making A Difference!

One hundred years from now, the size of house you lived in won’t really matter! The size of your financial portfolio won’t be an issue! The value of your estate won’t matter! The only thing that will matter is that you made a difference in the lives of the people God entrusted to your care!

You really are making a difference... Your love, time, touch, character and commitment speak volumes... Thank you for who you are and all that you do.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
