I hope you enjoy this week's edition.

Five Quotes I’m Thinking About:

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” —Helen Keller

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”  —Mark Twain

“Hard work does not guarantee success, but lack of hard work guarantees that there will be no success.” —Jim Valvano

“For all of the most important things, the timing always sucks. Waiting for a good time to quit your job? The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time. The universe doesn’t conspire against you, but it doesn’t go out of its way to line up the pins either. Conditions are never perfect. ‘Someday’ is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. Pro and con lists are just as bad. If it’s important to you and you want to do it ‘eventually’, just do it and correct course along the way.” —Tim Ferriss

“I vow to stay positive in the face of negativity.
When I am surrounded by pessimism, I will choose optimism.
When I feel fear, I will choose faith.
When I want to hate, I will choose love.
When I want to be bitter, I will choose to get better.
When I experience a challenge, I will look for an opportunity to learn and grow.
When faced with adversity, I will find strength.
When I experience a setback, I will be resilient.
When I meet failure, I will fail forward, toward future success.
With vision, hope, and faith, I will never give up and will always move forward toward my destiny.
I believe my best days are ahead of me, not behind me.
I believe I’m here for a reason and my purpose is greater than my challenges.
I believe that being positive not only makes me better, it makes everyone around me better.

So today and every day I will be positive and strive to make a positive impact on the world.”  —Jon Gordon. The Carpenter: A Story About the Greatest Success Strategies of All (pp. 42-43). Wiley. Kindle Edition.

A Movie Worth Watching:

Clint Eastwood is “the man!” The dude is 86 years old and still at the top of his craft!

Sully is the story of Captain Chelsey Sullenberger and the“Miracle on the Hudson.” After the commercial airplane he was piloting was disabled by striking a flock of geese, Sully somehow managed to execute an emergency landing of the plane on the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 people on board! The movie is now available on Blu-Ray, at Red Box, and on iTunes.

Clint Eastwood does a masterful job directing this movie! Tom Hanks is incredible as Sully. The supporting cast is excellent!

This movie is chock full of inspiring leadership lessons and principles! I highly recommend it! It could even be viewed by a leadership team and then dissected and discussed. Leadership lessons include:
  • Good leaders are diligent. They focus on doing their job. “I don’t feel like a hero. I’m just a man who was doing his job.” —Sully
  • Good leaders prepare for the unprecedented and unknown. “Everything is unprecedented…until it happens for the first time.” —Sully
  • Good leaders take responsibility.
“What if I did get this wrong? What if I endangered the lives of all those passengers?” —Sully
“I want you to know, I did the best I could.” —Sully
“I’ll bet my life on it. I’ll do it again.” —Sully
  • Good leaders understand that trust takes a lifetime to build, but can be lost by a moment of recklessness or stupidity. “I've had 40 years in the air but in the end, I'm going to be judged by 208 seconds.” —Sully
  • Good leaders make “the hard call.” “This is the Captain.  Brace for impact.” —Sully
I could go on and on!

The closing scene when the “real” Sully is reunited with the 155 survivors or “souls” of US Airways Flight 1549 is powerful!

This is a great movie for leaders and their teams to view and discuss.

Articles Worth Reading:

A couple of recent articles on the importance of self-talk have me thinking about the way I "think" and "talk" to myself. Here are two good ones.

In this short article, Jim reminds us of why our "self talk" actually has the potential to sabotage our best intentions and keep us from achieving our goals, purpose and destiny.

A great short read.

Dig even deeper into the power of self-talk with this excellent article by Rick Warren.

Rick is an incredible pastor, leader and difference maker, and this article contains insights that are well worth the 5-8 minutes it will take you to read. Ck it out today!
