FIVE QUOTES I’m Thinking About:

“Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.” —James Allen

“Begin with the end in mind.” —Stephen Covey

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.” —Howard Thurman

“All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.” —Calvin Coolidge

Every single emotion you have should be processed in prayer. —Timothy Keller

YOUTUBE CLIPS Worth Checking Out:

TED Talk with Brene Brown

Chad Sepulvado and I referenced this TED Talk at our last Lunch + Learn. I’ve listened to it several times. I even downloaded it and created an mp3 to put on my iPhone so that I could listen during my workouts. It’s that good! It is my favorite TED talk of all time… Evidently it resonates with a lot of people. It’s been viewed almost 6 million times!

The insights and principles Brown shares have the power to transform your life, your relationships and your work place.

Check this out asap.

TEDxMarin with Robb Willer

While we’re on TED Talks, here’s a very important talk. Especially right now… Seriously, we need this…

I know… I know… We’re all weary of politics. But wouldn’t you have to admit that there’s got to be a better way to have a political conversation than what we are hearing and seeing played out on talk radio or television news talk shows on a daily basis? It’s disheartening…

Social Psychologist, Robb Willer, describes the problem, shares some observations, and then points to a possible solution. By the way, the take-aways in this talk translate beyond the arena of political conversations and provide some helpful strategies you can employee in any conversation.

Another great Ted talk!

PODCAST WORTH LISTENING TO:

Season 8, Episode 1

I’ve really enjoy listening to Michael’s podcast. Right now, he’s in the process of revamping it, but this episode from June 2016 is “gold.”

I’ve probably listened to this podcast three, four or maybe more times. In it, Michael discusses the differences between a “scarcity mindset” and an “abundance mindset,” and how “scarcity thinking”  will limit your future and sabotage your life. You can listen to the podcast on iTunes or using this link.

BTW, One of the things I love about Michael’s podcast is that he provides a full transcript of each episode. In fact, here’s a link to the transcript of this episode: https://michaelhyatt.com/se0801-limiting-mindset.html

This is a session you’ll find yourself going back to again and again. It really is that good!

THREE ARTICLES WORTH READING:

The culture you establish, build, cultivate and nurture at your workplace, on your team and in your family is critical! It will impact the performance and effectiveness of your team, more than any other single factor. In fact, leadership and business guru, Peter Drucker once said it like this: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

In this post, Dr. Tim Elmore, describes five attitudes and actions that will kill your company, team and / or family culture. This article is a great read! Check it out asap!

Seth Godin’s Blog

Seth’s ability to distill poignant insights in really short pieces blows me away. This is a really short post by Seth that packs a powerful punch!

Discover an “addiction” that many of us have and aren’t even aware of. Make a decision today that you’re going to do something about it! The insanity stops now!

What Leaders Need to Know About Their Most Important Relationship

Since I’ve already referenced Michael Hyatt, not only is his podcast excellent, but he is sort of “the man” when it comes to blogging! The dude is prolific! I love his stuff!

If you’re married and you’re a leader, the health of your marriage will directly impact your effectiveness.

In this excellent post, Michael lays out three rubber-meets-the-road, life-related suggestions for improving a good marriage and rebuilding a broken one. This is an excellent post. Check it out!

Until next time:
Keep learning! Keep leading!

The First LUNCH + LEARN of 2017 is in the books!

What a great way to kick off the New Year! The first LUNCH + LEARN of 2017 was incredible!

In fact, just this morning I received this pic and text message from Wes Harrell of LifeGuard Ambulance in Birmingham who brought seven team members to L+L, some coming from as far away as Santa Rosa Beach, FL.

"Thank you for investing in my team!  Several Lifeguard folks, including Tennessee, have requested to  sign up for March's event 👍 Mike Crowell from Gadsden also asked if he could register his LTs.  Our response - 'Investment in others will always be APPROVED!’"

What a great way to begin the day! Thanks so much for sharing that, Wes!

If you didn’t get to make yesterday's LUNCH + LEARN, make plans to join us at the next one. We've already got it scheduled:

LUNCH + LEARN

I’ll be sharing more info about the topic in the coming weeks.

Special thanks to Chad Sepulvado from Jackson National for the Dive Deep section in yesterday’s L+L. Chad’s authenticity and vulnerability were so powerful. If you want to check out the book Chad referenced, it is called GRIT by Angela Duckworth. You can find it here

For extended notes from yesterday's L+L, email me at the above address. We've recorded these sessions and are currently exploring ways to make the audio available to you free of charge. Keep checking back and we'll update you.

One closing thought and a pic from yesterday's event.  See you next time!

Why You Need To Worship Today!

Dick Mills was a modern evangelist who was especially used in the gift of prophecy.

Janet and I had the privilege of hosting Dick in our first pastorate… Dick must have been close to eighty at the time, and He was one  of the most kind, humble, “beautiful” men I’ve ever met… During the four nights Dick was with us, he shared a “word of prophecy” over Janet that we’re still holding on to today. In fact, we’ve already seen aspects of that “word” fulfilled in so many amazing ways…

Before Dick went home to be with the Lord, whenever he felt that he was under some kind of spiritual or Satanic attack... Whenever he felt like he was being harassed by the evil one, he shared that he would often go to a private room, put two chairs out in the room, each chair facing the other…

Then Dick would simply say out loud to the evil one: “Devil, sit down… I’m going to worship God, and you’re going to watch me.”

Wow! Wow! Wow! I love that!

Maybe that’s what you need to do today?

Maybe you’ve been battling sickness, depression, anxiety, fear, worry, debt, the loss of a job, relational challenges or difficulties? Maybe you feel harassed by the evil one?

What if today, in the privacy of your home, you decided you were going to make a stand

What if today, you pulled out two chairs, turned them facing towards one another, and then just addressed the evil one out loud:

“Satan! Sit down! I’m going to worship God and you’re going to watch me…”

And, then, you began to offer to God, “…a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that that profess His name.” (Hebrews 13:15)

What happens when you worship?

1) Authentic worship breaks chains! (Acts 16:23-25; Isaiah 58)

Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! Acts 16:25-26

2) Authentic worship helps me get my attention off of me and onto God!

3) Authentic worship helps me cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

4) Authentic worship restores our joy and our strength!

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! 19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength! —Habakkuk 3:17-19

5) Authentic worship brings the presence of God! Psalm 22:3 says that God “…is enthroned on the praises of [His people]…”

This is your opportunity!

Today is the day!

Don’t procrastinate! Find yourself a room! Take out two chairs! Declare your heart for God!

“Satan! Sit down! I’m going to worship God and you’re going to watch me…”
